Birkat Habayit - Home Blessing - How It Was Made Bookmark and Share

Very often, I'm asked about papercutting, "How do you do that?" It's actually pretty simple...an idea, a little sketching, some good paper and a (very) sharp knife. For a multi-layered papercut, there is some planning about what colors go where, but after the idea phase, that's about all the thinking that goes into it. The rest of the time, my hands are moving and my mind is on whatever inspired the papercut...a bit of Torah, a midrash, an image of Israel

For the Birkat Habayit, Blessing for the Home, Hamsa, the inspiration was to do a simplified, modernized text combined with the traditional symbols often found in the hamsa as good luck amulet—an eye, fish, and birds. Here's an e-book that show step-by-step how this Jewish papercut was created.

The Birkat Habayit makes a wonderful gift to someone with a new home, to a newly married couple, or for just about any Jewish occasion.
